An 88th-minute Anton Stach free-kick settled a tense encounter at the City Ground, but Leeds’ opening-day victory was built on organisation, resilience and James Trafford’s debut clean sheet.

A dramatic finish to a demanding opener

Leeds United began their 2026/27 Premier League campaign with the sort of away victory that can shape the mood of an entire opening month. For most of the afternoon at the City Ground, the match was balanced on a knife-edge. Nottingham Forest had opportunities, Leeds had moments of their own, and neither side could quite find a finish. Then, with two minutes of normal time remaining, Anton Stach bent a free-kick beyond Matz Sels to give Daniel Farke’s side all three points.

The 1–0 win deserves to be remembered for more than one outstanding strike. It also brought a clean sheet, a composed competitive debut for James Trafford and a first indication that several new arrivals could settle quickly into the demands of Premier League football. Leeds were not overwhelming winners, and the afternoon was never comfortable, but they found the discipline to stay in a contest long enough for one moment of quality to decide it.

How the first half developed

Farke selected summer arrivals Trafford, Tarik Muharemović and Harry Wilson from the start, with Ethan Ampadu captaining a team that mixed familiar energy with fresh faces. Leeds threatened early when Ampadu’s long throw was only partly cleared and Stach struck a deflected shot that forced Sels to react. It was a reminder that Leeds could create pressure from second balls even before their passing sequences had fully settled.

Forest responded with dangerous deliveries and physical play around the Leeds area. Trafford made an important save to keep out an Igor Jesus header, while the home side found further openings without the decisive finish. At the other end, Wilson converted a Jayden Bogle delivery but the assistant referee’s offside flag ruled the goal out. Rather than breaking the deadlock, it left both teams wrestling for control heading towards the interval.

The goalless half-time score was a fair reflection of a game in which the visitors had attacking possibilities but also relied on concentration at the back. A first-half goal might have transformed the encounter, but Leeds had to remain patient.

The adjustment and the breakthrough

After the interval, Leeds gradually found better attacking positions without completely removing Forest’s threat. Brenden Aaronson tested Sels, while a later opportunity for Muharemović came after Noah Okafor had replaced Wilson and immediately added a different kind of pace and directness to the forward line. Sels produced a particularly important stop from the defender’s header.

Farke also introduced Sean Longstaff in place of Aaronson as the contest entered its final stretch. That change offered fresh legs and a way of managing the midfield before the decisive moment arrived. Stach won a free-kick in a promising central area following a challenge by Nikola Milenković. The midfielder took the responsibility himself and curled the ball beyond Sels for the only goal of the day.

It was a spectacular winner, but it was not an accidental victory. Leeds had competed throughout, forced the Forest goalkeeper into work and protected their own goal when the hosts built momentum. Their late reward followed nearly 90 minutes of staying organised.

What stood out — and Farke’s verdict

Stach will understandably lead the headlines, yet Trafford was just as important to the outcome. The goalkeeper looked alert when Forest put pressure on Leeds and finished his competitive debut with a clean sheet. Ampadu’s leadership, Muharemović’s defending and the contributions of the substitutes gave the result a collective feel. A 1–0 away win is rarely produced by the match-winner alone.

In his post-match assessment, Farke emphasised how valuable the first three points were, particularly away to difficult opposition. He was pleased with the clean sheet and the fact that several newcomers contributed to the result. That measured reaction matters: the manager celebrated the win without pretending Leeds had controlled every minute.

The opening day offered a useful blueprint. Leeds did not need to be flawless to win, but they had to defend their penalty area, deal with pressure and take a decisive opportunity. Stach supplied the moment that will be replayed; the structure around him made sure it mattered.

Verdict

Three points, one clean sheet and an away winner worthy of any opening-day highlights package. Forest made Leeds work hard, and there will be attacking details to improve, but this was a strong first answer to the challenge of a new Premier League season. The travelling supporters left Nottingham with a result and a moment they will remember for a long time.
